The -78kg final was between Kubin (GER) and Mansour (BEL) the latter coming into the final sporting a nasty bruise under her left eye that she’d picked up earlier in the day. It was an edgy, tentative affair with neither fighter prepared to unleash big attacks. There was just enough action to ensure that both fighters entered the golden score period without being penalized.

There is a little over a month to go before the World Championships which will be held this year in Tokyo. This is an important stage for many reasons in the qualification process for the Olympic Games in London in 2012.

The Secretary General and Treasurer of the Commonwealth Judo Association Chris Purcell has very sadly passed away after being diagnosed with prostrate cancer a little over six weeks ago. The family has the deepest sympathies of all involved in Commonwealth judo that were lucky enough to have known and worked with him. Chris was an exceptionally dedicated administrator whose efforts to manage and organize Commonwealth Judo were unrivalled.
